Sync Checker is a diagnostic application which can check if two folders or disks are perfectly synchronized, i.e. If they have exactly the same contents.When creating backup copies of valuable files, or when making sure that two computers or mobile devices work on the same set of data, the status of being “in perfect sync” can be very important.
Anyone who experienced Ford Motor Company's [NYSE:F] MyFord Touch infotainment system is likely still recovering from the nightmare that were the blue screen of death, glitchy software, frozen screens, slow responses, and a complicated overall user experience. For the 2016 model year, Ford wiped the slate clean and ditched the MyFord Touch system in favor of Sync 3.
The new Sync 3 system loses the previous Microsoft Auto operating system and uses Blackberry's QNX system. For the technically inclined, think Linux versus DOS here.

Recently, we had the opportunity to spend some time with Sync 3 in the 2016 Ford Escape. Here's what we learned:
The Good
Right off the bat Sync 3 is galaxies better than MyFord Touch in the real world. It's quick, and we didn't experience one hiccup when it came to the user interface in all our testing. Simply put, it actually works as you would expect. While this might seem like a trivial thing, after using MyFord Touch, it's rather notable.

It's also dead simple to use. The virtual buttons on the touchscreen are large and crisp. The layout is simple, and so is the graphical user interface. It's not visually distracting in the least.
Changing settings; using Bluetooth streaming; switching between navigation, radio, and the settings functions--it's all a cinch. Plug in your iPhone and it instantly indexes the music and starts playing. Want to play Pandora off your iPhone? No problem, it's simple and works. We can't say same for some other automakers' infotainment systems.

The Bad
It's 2016. These are 2016 model year vehicles. Sync 3 is a new system from Ford, and it doesn't come with Apple's CarPlay system or Google's Android Auto. To be fair, at this week's Consumer Electronics Show, Ford announced that all 2017 models with Sync 3 would be getting both CarPlay and Android Auto, and that Ford will offer a free update for 2016 model year vehicles with Sync 3 to add these systems later this year. Still, why didn't Sync 3 launch with these?
Flat out, Sync 3 isn't pretty. The bit about it being dead simple in the list of good things? It's almost to the point of being a detriment. The graphical user interface is beyond simple. It's as if they designed it, coded it, and then said, 'It's 5 pm, let's not bother making it shiny or pretty. I want to go home and have a beer.' Even just a smidge of spit and polish (read: graphic design) would improve it visually. We aren't talking about adding fancy flash animation by any means.

Volvo's new touchscreen Sensus infotainment system is easy-to-use and gorgeous. Chrysler's current third-generation Uconnect system is drop-dead simple to use and not hard on the eyes, though the low-resolution screen is annoying. Chrysler's newly announced fourth-generation Uconnect system rectifies the low-resolution screen issue and makes the easy-to-use infotainment system even prettier than before.
If others can do it, why can't Ford?
Bottom Line
Is Sync 3 better than MyFord Touch? Absolutely. Is it the best infotainment system on the market? Not yet. But like most technologies, it will continue to improve with updates, and it's worlds better than what we had before.

Summary
Microsoft Outlook 2016 and Microsoft Outlook 2013 include a feature that is informally known as the synchronization monitor or sync monitor. The sync monitor is a continuous background check of local folders in the Outlook .ost file to verify that they are in sync with their related server folders. If the sync monitor's logic concludes that a folder is not in sync, the program runs a series of repairs to resolve the problem. The October 4, 2016, Update for Outlook 2016 and the October 4, 2016, Update for Outlook 2013 change the detection and repair logic, and also add some diagnostic logging to the sync monitor feature.

More information
The sync monitor runs a series of detection and repair actions based on the synchronization state health of every folder. For example, the sync monitor checks the unread items in the local copy of a folder, and then compares those items to the unread items in the server copy of the folder. If the number of items in each group do not match, a repair is necessary.
The repair process is a series of steps that try to restore the sync state of the folders. The steps are performed in order from least-intrusive to most-intrusive. If all other repairs fail, the sync monitor schedules a full re-sync of the folder.
Sometimes, the original problem detection logic that is used by the sync monitor is too aggressive. In this case, folders that are in a good sync state are incorrectly identified as broken. If the repair on these folders cannot be successfully completed by using one of the non-intrusive steps, a full folder re-sync will eventually be scheduled. This can cause an unexpected re-sync of a folder. If the folder contents are large, this can also create unexpected network traffic and a poor user experience while you wait for the full re-sync of the folder to finish.
The October 4, 2016, updates for Outlook 2016 and Outlook 2013 add the following important changes to the sync monitor logic:
- The algorithm for detecting folders that are out-of-sync is adjusted to be less aggressive.
- Diagnostic logging is added to help the Outlook product team understand future problems in this area.
- Registry value options are added to enable control of the repair process steps.

The sync monitor repair process includes the following steps:
- Run a simple sync of the folder.
- Find and fix known problems that affect the local binary information that is used to track sync status.
- Run an integrity check scan on the .ost file to repair integrity problems in the data file.
- Clear the offline items.

The data for this registry setting controls the repair process in a cumulative manner. To do this, it starts by using the better logic detection methods, and then it uses the repair options from least-intrusive to most-intrusive. If diagnostic logging is enabled and the sync monitor engine decides that a folder is out-of-sync, it runs the repair options and adds a message to the Sync Issues folder that contains the diagnostic information. This information can be provided to a Microsoft Support professional if additional troubleshooting is required to understand a sync monitor problem. The subject of the diagnostic log message is Sync Monitor.
Recommended settings
The registry and diagnostic options that are added by the update are provided to help isolate and correct problems that affect the sync monitor. There is no one particular 'right' setting to use to resolve all problems. Use the following guidelines for the new settings:
- If you suspect that you are experiencing folder re-syncs although there is no problem, set the
SyncMonitorLevel
value to 2. This turns on the better detection logic and provides the best first step to fix the problem. - If you are experiencing full folder re-syncs and the folders are so large that the network traffic or user experience is problematic, set the
SyncMonitorLevel
value to 3. This should prevent Outlook from performing the full folder re-sync. If you use this option but your local folder is out-of-sync, the problem will not be repaired. - If the folder re-syncs are frequent enough to cause problems for more than one user, consider adding the diagnostic logging so that there is data to help Microsoft diagnose the problem and make future improvements to the sync monitor feature.
- If you decide to turn off some repair options such as the clear offline items choice, you should enable the diagnostic logging and check for problem folders occasionally. If a particular folder is problematic and you want to repair the folder manually, you can clear the folder manually. To do this, use the Clear Offline Items on the General tab of the folder properties. To access the folder properties, right-click the folder in the folder list, and then select Properties.
